America’s Next Top Model: College Edition (Jamaica)

Supermodel & businesswoman  Tyra Banks visited “the Rock” this past summer in the month of June to film scenes for her hit reality show America’s Next Top Model Cycle 19 (College Edition). Jamaica was selected by Tyra and her team as the international destination for this cycle currently airing on the CW network. The six contestants : Nastasia, Victoria, Kiara, Kristen, Laura and the returning Leila all packed their bags and jetted off to the tropical paradise.

The girls were greeted on a tour bus with Jamaican male models from Pulse and Saint International Modelling agencies respectively and acted as their tour guides. Romance was definitely developing between Kiara and one of the male models, Korey Rowe. They were then escorted to the Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay where they spent the remaining three weeks on the island. Of special emphasis is  the fact that Tyra shot her very first swimsuit calendar in Jamaica and also produced it herself and this is the reason she gives for taking the girls there for this cycle.

For the weekly challenge, the girls were to choreograph dance moves reflective of the Dancehall culture popular in Jamaica. The challenge was conducted by popular Dancehall artiste Konshens and Jonte’, choreographer and movement mentor. At the end of the challenge Kiara and Nastasia were victorious.

The photo shoot took place at the Martha Brae River in Trelawny on the north coast of Jamaica. The concept of this photo shoot was a woman caught in a love triangle between two men. The woman visits Jamaica with her husband and begins to fall for one of the locals. Hmm, very interesting! The photographer was William Richards who has shot many world-renowned celebrities such as Jamaican Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt. At panel, Nastasia’s photo was selected as the best for that week.

In episode 10, the weekly challenge required the girls to pose with dolphins in Cedella Marley’s swimwear collection “High Tide”. Cedella Marley is a singer, and also the daughter of Reggae legend Bob Marley, now turned fashion designer. At the end of the challenge both Cedella and Johnny selected Leila as the challenge winner.

The photo shoot took place at the world-renowned Dunn’s River Falls. The concept required the girls to pose on the falls like warriors. All the photos were great with the exception of Kristen’s and Laura’s where both of them ended up in the bottom two. The best photo went to Leila and as Tyra promised her favourite photo from this shoot would be blown up and hung in her house. That honour was bestowed upon Kiara who gave an amazingly fierce warrior princess photo.

Leila got best photo for this week.

Kiara’s photo will be hung up in Tyra’s home.

In episode 11, the frustration level was definitely high for the girls as the reality started setting in that one of them might be America’s Next Top Model. The challenge was judged by Rob Evans and Yendi Phillips, Miss Universe 1st runner up 2010. It required the girls to film an advertisement for the Jamaica Tourist Board encouraging tourists to visit Jamaica while on a horse in the Caribbean Sea. There were a few problems with the horses but all the girls filmed the ad and Kiara was selected as the winner.

In this week’s photo shoot the ad for ANTM’s official fragrance ‘Dream Come True’ was filmed. Whichever girl wins ANTM, their ad will be used to promote ‘Dream Come True’ around the world. Kiara was given the best photo for this week while Laura and Nastasia were in the bottom 2.

Kiara received the best photo for this week.

In the final episode, Kelly Cutrone met the models in Trelawny, Jamaica to guide them through their official Nine West photo shoot. Kelly and the photographer Jez Smith, got into an heated argument in the middle of the shoot which caused the models to become uncomfortable. Afterwards, the girls posed in Half Moon Bay for their photo shoot for Nylon Magazine.

Then it was time for the final runway; the battle for the fiercest top model was fought between the finalists, Laura, Leila and Kiara at the mysteriously haunted Rose Hall Great House in Jamaica’s 2nd city, Montego Bay. The previously eliminated contestants returned to join the finalists and their families in an extraordinary fashion show that highlighted the beauty, culture, history and music of Jamaica. During the show, Kiara was the fiercest on the runway with a stellar walk. Laura delivered a commendable performance, while Leila failed miserably as she fell twice in front of the judges and the audience.

At the discussion panel, the final three girls were critiqued. The judges felt that Kiara’s Nine West photo was disappointing, but her runway walk was highly praised. Laura received good comments for her photo, as well as her walk, while Leila was heavily scrutinized for her mishap on the runway, however her photo was the most praised out of all the 3 finalists. Later, Tyra Banks first announced that Leila was eliminated, Kiara soon followed, and then Laura was selected as the winner of America’s Next Top Model:College Edition making her the 19th winner.
